HEALTH AND NATURE SURVEY COVER LETTER
INTRODUCTION: You are invited to participate in a research study conducted through Pacific Lutheran University’s Psychology department. The main investigators of the study are Dr. Heidi McLaughlin, a faculty member at Pacific Lutheran University, and Alannah Smith, a psychology major and research assistant. You were chosen to participate in the study because you have gained access to our survey link through an online source. Approximately 100 participants will be enrolled in this study. Participation should require about 15 minutes of your time. Participation is entirely voluntary; you may withdraw from the study at any time without consequence. This study has been approved for data collection by Pacific Lutheran University's Human Participants Review Board.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to investigate your knowledge of health concepts such as stomach illness and assess the dynamic of your relationship with nature. This is a pilot study for research that we will be conducting in the future. The results of this study will be used to guide us in our future research and may potentially be included in future conference presentations or publications. Responses will be completely anonymous; your identity will not be linked to this survey in any way.
PROCEDURES: If you decide to participate in the study, you will complete 55 questions; some will be multiple choice and some will be short answer format. Questions will inquire about demographic information, health knowledge, and your feelings toward nature. Examples of the questions include "What is your highest level of education?", "How does someone get a stomach illness?" and some which ask you to rate your level of agreement with statements such as "I often feel disconnected from nature." If you do not wish to participate, simply exit out of the browser for the survey.
RISKS, INCONVENIENCES, AND DISCOMFORTS: There are no known major risks to your participation in this study. It may be slightly inconvenient for you to fill out a long questionnaire.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS: If you are a student at Pacific Lutheran University you may receive research familiarization credit for your participation. Otherwise, there are no major benefits to you for your participation, but a potential benefit may be the experience of participating in research that can lead to furthering the progress of our work in the academic field.
ANONYMITY: Records of information that you provide for the research study and your personally identifying information will not be linked in any way. It will not be possible to identify you as the person who provided any specific information for the study.
